CHAPTER 10

Before the night was through, Kassian and I sat in a corner booth close together like a pair of lovebirds. Instead of whispering sweet nothings into my ear as we people-watched, he told me all about his patrons—-who was who, what they did, their skill sets, and who to avoid if Kassian wasn’t around. Violet kept the drinks coming but didn’t say a word. Neither of us ordered anything more potent than soda water.

It was weird being this close to him, his breath caressing my ear. His arm across my shoulder, his fingers absentmindedly drawing patterns on my sleeve. It was distracting, sexy, and downright confusing. I couldn’t tell if it was part of the ruse with him or simply casual attention. Regardless, it was working. More than one angel took notice of our closeness. Some came over to introduce themselves; others smirked and walked on.

“Do you normally shower women with this much attention at The Feather?” I asked as I stirred the melting ice around in my drink with the cocktail straw.

“Normally, I don’t bring my women to The Feather. I rarely mix business and pleasure. The patrons know it, so you’re going to be a novelty at first, but they’ll get used to it. Better they get used to you like this than as the rebel halfling,” Kassian said. “By morning, they won’t be talking about your actions in East Haven, only how you seem to have ensnared me.”

“Like they would believe that you, the archangel in charge of all of New Haven, and me, a nobody from the shadows, could ever be something,” I scoffed. Kassian brought his hand up beneath my chin, his fingers gently forcing me to look up at him. His eyes smoldered with challenge.

“Maybe you should help me make them believe it, little angel,” Kassian challenged. “You are far from nobody to me.”

The edges of Kassian’s lips turned up in a smile, the challenge enticing but the smile even more so. He might be a bit of a prick and an archangel to boot, but Kassian was an attractive man. It was no hardship to lean forward and kiss him as my body hummed with anticipation. His hand wrapped firmly around my hair and neck, and using his hold to bring me closer, his lips captured mine. He tasted of citrus, soda water, and whiskey. His free hand wrapped around my waist and tugged me onto his lap as I lost myself to the kiss. The din of The Feather faded as I refused to submit under his kiss and held my own. He nipped at my lower lip. Two could play at that game. I pulled his lower lip into my mouth with a gentle tug. It was a mistake, as his tongue invaded my mouth.

A loud cough sounded beside the table, startling me. Kassian didn’t pull away. He merely tightened his hold on my waist. This was the archangel in charge, and he would not be corralled by a mere cough.
